My great, great grandmother wrote to my grandmother with the loveliest penmanship on these postcards (see below), dated 1930s from Ascona, Switzerland.

Beautiful.

California Road Trip Part II

The plan after the Tahoe trip:  drive to Clearlake on Friday where my husband’s uncle resides.  We would meet his parents there for a little birthday celebration, but the plans changed.  I received a call from my dad as we were leaving Tahoe.  My great uncle Ray had passed away.  Without further detail, we drove back home to Santa Rosa.  Talked to my dad when we arrived at home and found out my folks were leaving the next (Saturday) morning for the LA area to support and comfort of the one left behind, Ray’s wife.  So…Husband and I unpacked from Tahoe and repacked for LA,  drove back to Sacramento (where my folks reside) that night, and left with them in the morning to LA.  *Deep breath*

I did not spend too much time with Uncle Ray, but the few memories I have of him are very sweet.  He was a gentle, kind, easy-going man.  He was 91 going on 70, very welcoming, and the first to tell you the story of how he met his wife and their journey through life together.  Like I said before, very sweet.  He will be missed.

Work Is Overrated

That is what my father-in-law said to me…. and I tend to agree with him (I think Thomas does too)!

So, five months later here I am again. I finally pulled my head out of my you-know-where. Maybe not fully out, but just peeking out enough to see what it was like before work, dull and tiresome work.

Ahhhh…..it is nice. I need to do this more often

The pet bed shown above is one of two projects I completed in the last few months – only because the fabric was so cute (polka-dots!) and it was so easy to make. I picked out 1/2 yard of fleece material, folded it in half, sewed down the longer open edge with the wrong sides together, cut 1/2 inch fringe on the shorter edges, stuffed with Poly-fil, and tied the top and bottom layers of fringe in knots…..and that’s it! Real simple. One evening and it’s done.

I think Thomas likes it (heh)….he looks cozy, doesn’t he?

Sewing Chair

It all started one morning without eggs for breakfast – oh no! So my sweet husband drove to the market (only about four blocks away)….ten minutes goes by, then fifteen, twenty and so on. I am thinking, “it shouldn’t take this long to buy some eggs…something bad must have happened”. When he returned home, he not only brought home eggs, but a sewing chair too! Not from the market, of course. He found it at an estate sale across the way for only twenty dollars. What a great find…and surprise!

The cushion has been reupholstered with a bright orange 70s fabric.

Ta-da! Spools of thread or ribbon, perhaps?

My apologies for the more not-so-nice photos, but you get the idea.

Pucker Up, Buttercup

Weekend brunch is one of my favorite things. I can take or leave dinner, but if it involves eggs or pancakes – count me in! Anyway, my folks were over on Saturday for a day visit, giving me a good reason to use the inspiring ideas for brunch in the May/June issue of Blueprint.

The menu was (using some, but not all of Blueprint’s recipes/ideas) like the ham, swiss, and tomato strata, mixed greens with avocado and cherry tomatoes, vanilla yogurt with granola, raspberries and blueberries, apricot grapefruit juice, Good Earth sweet and spicy iced tea, and coffee.

Also, I made a rustic plum tart out of the plums we collected from the tree in the back. Apparently, I was a little too eager to use the plums – because we puckered as we took the first bite! Adding more sugar to the recipe would have helped a great deal. *grin* I can tell it is a good recipe to hang on to – next time, I’ll make sure the plums are ripe.

A very BIG thank you to my s’mom for the storage box full of fabric leftovers. Yards and yards of material that she does not have a need for – solid canvas, floral upholstery, and lining…..I’ll take them! Great for experimenting with and possibly some Christmas gifts?

Happy Fourth of July

Since we will not be in town…..I wanted to wish everyone a Happy Fourth! We are leaving for Redding tomorrow, visiting the in-laws. It is supposed to be 108 degrees there….did I say “Happy Fourth”? Yeah, a little too warm for any hiking adventures and just about anything else outdoors. Darn!

On a happier note: I made a dessert for the holiday. It is called Blueberry Cookie Pie. You can find the recipe here. I added raspberries and the blue and red stars to this recipe for the festivities. It tastes better than it looks in the photo. Really.

We have a plum tree in the backyard of the house. They are not quite ripe yet, but I was really hoping to bring some with us. My mother-in-law would have loved it! I think they will be ready to pick late July, early August. I can’t wait. I love plums.
